College Move-In in Florida: What Every Student and Parent Should Know

Florida is home to some of the largest universities in the country. UCF in Orlando enrolls over 70,000 students. FSU in Tallahassee, UF in Gainesville, Rollins in Winter Park, Stetson in DeLand — the list goes on. Every August, hundreds of thousands of students and families descend on Florida’s college towns for move-in weekend.

It’s exciting. It’s also, if you’re not prepared, a logistical nightmare.

Here’s what we’ve learned after years of helping students and families navigate college move-in day across Central Florida.

Book Your Movers Before You Book Your Parking Pass

Move-in weekend slots fill up weeks in advance — sometimes faster than the university’s own parking reservations. If you’re hiring movers, contact them as soon as your move-in date is confirmed. For August move-in, that means June or July at the latest.

Know Your Dorm’s Move-In Rules Before Moving Day

Every residence hall has its own set of move-in rules:

  • Elevator reservations — Many multi-story dorms require you to reserve the service elevator in advance. Miss the reservation and you’re waiting in line.
  • Move-in time windows — Most universities assign specific time slots (e.g., 8am–12pm). Arriving outside your window can mean waiting for hours.
  • Cart and dolly policies — Some dorms provide carts; others don’t. Know before you show up.
  • Vehicle access — Loading zones fill fast. Know where you’re allowed to park and for how long.

Check your university’s housing portal and email at least two weeks before move-in day.

What Florida’s August Heat Means for Your Move

Florida in August is brutal — temperatures regularly hit 90°F+ with humidity that makes it feel like 100°F or more. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Start early. Universities assign morning slots for a reason. The earlier you move, the cooler it is.
  • Hydrate constantly. Bring water for everyone — your crew, your parents, yourself.
  • Watch for afternoon thunderstorms. Florida’s thunderstorm season peaks in summer. A 2pm storm is almost guaranteed. Try to have loading done before noon.
  • Electronics hate heat. Laptops, monitors, and consoles left in a hot car or truck can be damaged. Keep sensitive electronics in an air-conditioned vehicle.

What to Actually Bring (and What to Leave Home)

Dorm rooms are small. This is the most common mistake first-year students make — bringing everything and then realizing half of it doesn’t fit.

Essentials:

  • Bedding (check your bed size — many dorms use extra-long twin)
  • Shower caddy and flip flops
  • Power strips (surge-protected — most dorms require it)
  • A fan (even with AC, airflow matters)
  • First-aid basics and medications
  • Command hooks and strips (most dorms prohibit nails)

Leave at home (for now):

  • Your entire wardrobe — ship seasonal clothes home when you don’t need them
  • Bulky furniture — measure your room before buying anything
  • Appliances that aren’t allowed (many dorms prohibit toasters, hot plates, etc.)

UCF-Specific Tips

UCF is one of the most complex move-in operations in the country — 10,000+ students moving in over a few days across multiple residential communities (Nike, Hercules, Apollo, Lake Claire).

  • Stadium parking is your friend. Remote lots with shuttle service are often faster than waiting for a spot near the dorms.
  • The UCF move-in app usually has real-time parking and elevator wait times. Use it.
  • Neptune/Libra communities are popular but have narrow access roads — plan accordingly.
  • If you’re in Lake Claire apartments, treat it like a full apartment move, not a dorm move.

FSU and Tallahassee Tips

  • FSU’s older brick dorms (Landis, Reynolds) have stairs and no elevators. Come prepared with the right equipment.
  • Tallahassee gets heavy summer rain — have a plan for keeping boxes dry between the truck and the building.
  • Off-campus moves in Tallahassee are common; the area around Tennessee Street and Stadium Drive moves fast in August.

UF and Gainesville Tips

  • UF assigns move-in times by last name/lottery. Check your MyUFL portal early.
  • Beyer, Broward, and East Hall are among the most trafficked — be patient and get there exactly at your assigned time.
  • Gainesville traffic around campus on move-in weekend is significant. Build in extra travel time.

Consider Summer Storage Instead of Hauling Everything Home

If you’re staying in Florida or coming back in the fall, hauling your belongings back home at the end of the school year — and then back again in August — is expensive and exhausting.

A better option: semester storage. Hutley Van Systems offers secure warehouse storage between semesters. We pick up from your dorm or apartment, store everything safely, and deliver it back at the start of the next semester. You fly home with a carry-on. We handle the rest.

When to Call Professionals vs. DIY

DIY works fine if:

  • You have a small load (one room, minimal furniture)
  • You have family members who can help and a vehicle large enough
  • Your dorm is on a lower floor or has good elevator access

Call professionals when:

  • You’re moving a full apartment’s worth of furniture
  • You’re more than 2 hours away from campus
  • You have heavy items (a real bed frame, a couch, a TV stand)
  • You want move-in day to take 2 hours, not 6
